What is a postnatal plan?

Updated: 1 day ago

We spend a great deal of time during pregnancy thinking about labour, baby clothes, prams and accessories, but do we think enough about life after birth?

A postnatal plan is something we should think about as in depth as we do our birth plan. It may sound overwhelming but with a pre-made planning document you will avoid overwhelm further down the road when you have a new tiny human to look after.

My postnatal planning document covers topics you can think about and discuss with your partner including:

  • visitors

  • emotional support

  • feeding

  • the household

Planning ahead can really lighten the mental and physical load, help you set boundaries and expectations in terms of visitors, help you and your partner to feel emotionally supported and working as a team.

It is true that many pregnant parents cannot imagine what life will be like with a newborn and therefore planning for that time can seem tricky. With a trained professional and someone who has been through the newborn period you can work through a plan in order to feel prepped for this new magical time.
